Events and Map Fairs 2008
The year 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of Captain John Smith’s arrival in the New World and the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown Virginia. The 1607 arrival of Captain Smith also marked a new era in mapmaking, as Smith set out to explore and map this uncharted region. It was from the Jamestown site that Captain John Smith and fourteen English colonists set out in a 30-foot open boat to explore and map the Chesapeake Bay on a three-month journey that would cover over 1,700 miles. Smith’s map of the area became the basis for many maps that followed, and was considered the most accurate representation of the Chesapeake Bay region for decades to come.
Heirloom Maps celebrated the achievements of John Smith and those brave colonists who literally mapped a new world. Heirloom Maps will be exhibiting an array of Chesapeake & Virginia maps and charts at upcoming shows this year.
Heirloom Maps will be exhibiting at the following antique map fairs - we look forward to seeing you there!
